Facial recognition, social media……and another toe hold for social engineering. Yay! In a 2011 article in the magazine CSO researchers demonstrated the ability, using facial recognition software, to link actual people with profiles on social networking sites AND…..get tons of information about them. I know this is an old article, but I stuffed it in a pile on my desk….and in cleaning today just found it and had to post a blog about it. This isn’t a big deal for those of us that closely monitor how our information on these social networking sites is viewed and shared. This is AWESOME for those of us who perform social engineering for good and bad.
Imagine, setting up shop outside of a target and being able to put a face and possibly tons of other information to a name. Companies already have a problem with employees exposing too much information without this technology….the point is that this makes it even easier. Not only that, but most social networking sites privacy/confidentiality has been notoriously dodgey, and people have still not generally been diligent about how well their information is protected. So, I wonder how long it will be before we see these technologies merged together as a feature instead of hacked together in the name of “progress” or “innovation”?
